Technical Background to jailbreak iOS 5
Thanks to the BootROM of Geohot Limera1n Exploit available for the Apple devices under iOS 5 at least one tethered jailbreak iOS 5 ready (device must restart the computer):
- Apple iPhone 4, iPhone 3G
- Apple iPad a Wifi & 3G
- Apple iPod Touch 3G & 4G
An untethered jailbreak iOS 5 requires also a userland exploit (not currently available)!
Supposedly, but could shortly after the official iOS 5 release a jailbreak untethered iOS 5 available!
For the following IOS devices (Apple A5 processor) iOS5 currently no jailbreak available - this has yet to land a user or bootrom exploit will be found to allow even a jailbreak iOS 5:

Jailbreak Tools for iOS 5
Also for iOS 5 are different jailbreak tools available:
- redsn0w: Be careful when using redsn0w jailbreak! For this purpose it is assumed an installed iOS 5 - an unlock the respective iOS 5 base bands is not possible. Please redsn0w only perform with unlocked iPhones! In the new redsn0w is a way to create a custom ipsw without the baseband update included! (Custom IPSW)
- PwnageTool: Custom firmware on Mac OS X - using a PwnageTool Jailbreak iOS 5 firmware included is compiled without baseband update. PwnageTool is therefore suitable for the iPhone Unlock (if previously a unlockbares baseband is loaded onto the iPhone). A new redsn0w will allow up to untethered jailbreak iOS 5 5 custom firmware to create the IOS.
- Sn0wbreeze: Sn0wbreeze creates custom firmwares on Microsoft Windows. Again, the baseband is not updated. A jailbreak with sn0wbreeze is therefore suitable for the iPhone unlock (again: unlockbares baseband MUST be present), however, could the days of Snowbreeze be counted when redsn0w soon under Windows to create a custom firmware without the baseband update can!
